Bike Portrait: Martha

We’re starting a new series of posts this summer: bike portraits to celebrate the cyclists of Dumfries in all their wonderful variety. Thanks to those who stopped to take their photo taken – we’ll be adding more portraits gradually over the next few weeks. Look out for us haunting the cycle paths as we accost passing bikes and do please stop for a chat and to have your photo taken!

Martha was another keen cyclist – she cycles every day, and all her family cycle too. We were particularly taken with her smart and practical basket on her bike … nothing handier for the everyday cyclist

Robert MacMillan

Robert (‘MacMillan as in Kirkpatrick’ – appropriately enough) had a serious road bike that looked as if it had done the miles – and he confirmed that it had over the 15 years that he had owned it. He does a lot of riding on the roads around Dumfries and thinks nothing of riding out around Kirkcudright and beyond.

Update

It seems we have inadvertently captured a legend – as the comments on our Facebook post show, including this one from his daughter:

This is my father, he cycled to Birmingham two winters in a row, one really bad snow, to visit his sister. His bike has done way more miles than his car.

We are impressed – and delighted we managed to flag down such a local legend. It just goes to show you don’t know what surprises your fellow cyclists might be concealing beneath a modest demeanour.

Joyce has only had her bike for a month and she’s riding it to get fitter – when we caught up with her she was just setting off on a five-mile ride. She sticks to the cycle paths, which she thinks are pretty good in the town. She was a bit unsure about getting her photo taken but we don’t know why – we think she looks great in her orange mac and contrasting green helmet straps.

Hamish trackstanding
Trackstanding … it’s harder than it looks!

We spotted Hamish’s bike before we spotted him – there aren’t many fixies in Dumfries! It’s an old track bike repurposed for the road. Hamish even volunteered to be photographed demonstrating his trackstand, for extra credibility points (rumour has it he has a unicycle too). Hamish’s message to the people of Dumfries? ‘Cycle more!’ – we couldn’t agree more…
