Railways, Romans and Windmill Remains

Saturday 23rd February: We’ll be riding from one windmill to another for the last of our history rides – starting at the Dumfries museum (originally a windmill of course) we’ll be riding north up to Duncow and the ‘windmill stump’ there.

Starting from the museum at 10:30am, we’ll head out using the Caledonian Cycleway, which used to be a railway linking Dumfries to the main line that passes through Lockerbie. Nice as it would be to have a faster train service to Edinburgh and Glasgow, at least this now provides a traffic-free and reasonably level route north through town all the way to Heathhall.

At the end of the cycle path we’ll rejoin the roads, and sticking to minor roads as much as possible, continue north as far as the ‘windmill stump’, the massive remains of what used to be another windmill. From there we’ll head through Duncow and past two roman sites,  including Carzield Fort near Kirkton. So quite a wide slice of history for a short bike ride! We’ll then rejoin the Caledonian cycleway and make our way back to town and the museum.

All in all the route will total 15.5 miles, and will be mostly gently undulating although there will be a bit of a climb to the windmill (they have a way of being at the top of hills…). We’ll make a couple of stops along the way at points of interest but will keep them short so people don’t get too chilled. Afterwards there will be a chance to defrost with tea and coffee  and biscuits courtesy of the museum (and if the last couple of rides have been anything to go by, a chance to continue with much cycling chat). We expect the ride to take a couple of hours, depending on how long we stop and the pace – we keep the speed down so that everyone can feel comfortable with the pace and has the time to look around and enjoy the scenery!
