Sponsored ride! Can you help raise money for accessible bikes?

For the last year, Cycling Dumfries have been working with Buddies to help get some of their members cycling – and so far it’s been a great success.  They’ve been going out at least twice a week, rain or shine, and we’ve been doing weekly sessions to help improve their skills (you may have seen us out and about on the cycle paths – give us a wave if you do). It’s been amazing to see people go from never having ridden a bike to pedalling around independently, although it really does show up the gaps in the bike network when you’re with people with a range of additional needs.

But Buddies don’t want to stop there – they want to spread the cycling love to those who can’t necessarily ever ride a two-wheeler, and those in wheelchairs. To that end, they’re raising money for more accessible bikes (the kind that were showcased in Dock Park in July) – and here’s where you can help. On Saturday 16th September they’re running a sponsored bike ride in Dock Park and anyone can turn up and do a few circuits. You can bring your own bike or borrow one of theirs, and raise money per lap or altogether. It will all help towards the purchase of more specialised bikes that can get people of any ability out cycling – even those using wheelchairs.

If you want to take part, you can download a sponsorship form – or to find out more email Buddies on info@buddiesdumfries.co.uk or contact us.

A ‘bike’ needn’t mean a two wheeler- it could even be something like this

Note that we’re always happy to spread the word about events like this in the area – just send us the details and we’ll do what we can to publicise it.
