With schools going back this week and only one more summer ride left (but it’s the big one – out to Mabie Forest!) it’s time to turn our attention to our next big event – the Big Bike Breakfast, which is rapidly becoming a fixture on the Dumfries cycling calendar.
On Friday 16th September we’ll be hosting our annual free breakfast for anyone cycling to work, school or college in the town – just turn up on your bike between 7 and 9 am for a hot roll, tea and coffee, cycle chat, and a chance to meet councillors and officials.
Although hosted by the council, the Big Bike Breakfast is entirely organised and funded by Cycling Dumfries – and this is where we hope you will come in. Although partly supported by the generosity of local traders, as it grows it has become more of an effort to run each year. This year, Bill Johnstone has offered to do the catering using his van – freeing up our volunteers – but we will still need to cover the costs. If you could help to ‘crowdsource’ the event this year with a few quid we’d be very grateful. There’s a PayPal button for online donations, or we will be shaking the tin on the day itself.
Even more importantly, if you’re a regular commuting cyclist, we hope you’ll bring a buddy this year. Do you have a colleague or fellow student who has long talked about cycling to work, or who has been moaning about the traffic on their 3 or 4 mile drive to work? Why not make this the opportunity to get them to actually try out cycling – with the incentive of a free breakfast to add that extra nudge. They’ll benefit from discovering the joys of cycling to work – and you’ll benefit from not having to hear them moan about the difficulties of finding a parking space, or showing up fifteen minutes late because the traffic was backed up the Whitesands. We’ll be offering more advice and ideas in the run up to the breakfast – so watch this space.
