Celebration of local history (and bicycles)

Via Sustrans

J.M. BarrieOn 11th September 11.00am an event will be held in Dumfries by Dumfries and Galloway Council to unveil the 3 characters on the Nith Viaduct which formerly carried the Maxwellton Railway.

The figures were voted for by the local community to reflect the diverse heritage of Dumfries. Come and meet JM Barrie, author of Peter and Wendy; Jean Mundell, founder of the Food Train in Dumfries and Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a local blacksmith who produced the world’s first pedal bicycle in 1839.

Jean MundellThis event will tie in with the Tour of Britain which is set to finish stage 3 in Dumfries that day. So bring your bike or walking shoes and take the opportunity to enjoy the Old Maxwellton Railway and the beautiful views from Nith Viaduct.

Please come along to the Nith Viaduct off Nunholme Rd Dumfries and join in the unveiling event.

We’re big fans of the Nith Viaduct and the Maxwelltown Railway path, so we hope there will be a big turnout – if you’re coming along for the Tour of Britain anyway, why not come in a bit earlier and say hello to our new local heroes?
