Dates for your Diaries

The days are getting longer, the ice and frost are (fingers crossed) but a memory – it’s time to start coming out of the inevitable winter hibernation and start planning

First up – this Sunday’s CTC ride is from Dumfries to Caerlaverock WWT reserve, led by our own Mike Gray and guided by Brian Morrell, the centre’s learning manager. I can highly recommend this as a fascinating ride – not least because last year we got the chance to watch two otters playing in the river by Dock Park. Binoculars highly recommended, more details on the CTC site.

Secondly – if anyone’s interested in becoming a cycling trainer there are places available on cycle trainer and assistant cycle trainer courses in Dumfries. The details are:

Assistant Cycle Trainer

  • 28th Feb; 6th March; 13th March @ Lochside Education Centre 3.30-6pm
  • Friday 16th March 10-4pm Lochside Education Centre
  • Sunday 18th March 10-4pm David Keswick Centre

Cycle Trainer

  • 2nd- 5th April 9.30-4pm Lochside Education Centre

Please see the Cycling Scotland website for more information about the courses. If you’re interested, contact Sue Brodie (Sue DOT Brodie AT dumgal DOT gov DOT uk)
Looking ahead, some of you might have heard of plans for a ride to lobby politicians over support for the Times’s ‘Cities fit for Cycling’ Campaign. One was held on Wednesday night in the run up to a debate in Parliament on cycle safety, and up to 2,000 cyclists attended. There are plans afoot to to hold an even bigger family friendly one on the 28th April. This is not just about England but getting down to London with your bike is quite an undertaking (not to mention expensive) so there is talk of holding a simultaneous event in Edinburgh to lobby Holyrood. It’s early stages yet, but if any of you would be interested in such a thing, let us know

And finally, it would be remiss of me not to remind you that we’ll be meeting as usual on the first Thursday of the month – the 1st of March – at the Coach and Horses, at 6pm. As ever, anyone is welcome to attend for cycling chat, and discussion of plans for the summer.
